The Semi-Abstract Landscape
w/Claudia Rilling
A twelve (12) session class
No class 11/26
Level: Intermediate to Advanced
In this intermediate-level landscape course, students will begin with a foundation in strong composition and shape, learning how to distill the complexity of expansive scenes into simple and expressive forms. The focus will be on shape and color, gradually eliminating non-essential details to reveal the essence of the landscape. Please bring your favorite landscape references to class- ones that have an apparent variety of shapes and values.
In the first week, we’ll concentrate on selecting references and uncovering the underlying design within the image. Students will begin on small surfaces to complete small studies in week 1 and 2, progressing to larger formats in weeks three on. Please bring several surfaces for the first couple of weeks: work on primed paper, loose linen, small panels, etc.
*Please note that beginning oil painting skills will not be covered in this class
Medium: Oil, pastel, or acrylic (class is taught in oil)
Level: Intermediate to advanced
Materials:
• Bring your preferred paints and brushes.
• Week 1 & 2: Small surface sizes (e.g., 3×4, 4×8, 6×6, 8×8); please bring several. Work on inexpensive materials: gesso-primed paper, loose linen, or thin panels (primed) . “Canva” paper is also a great option, comes in pads.
• Weeks 3 and on: We will discuss the size and plan for the remaining weeks during the first two classes. We will work larger in subsequent sessions.
