Juror’s Statement
Entering this room, one views not just individual works, but a cross-section of a vital community of artists. This selection of works attempts to highlight both the common values evident among the members of the Wayne Art Center, as well as the variety of their artistic strategies, which range from gentle satire to hard-edged analysis. Some works display a fanciful reverie, while others demonstrate a disciplined and self-effacing engagement with tradition. Quite a few artists explore the relationship between pattern and image. Some of these individuals embrace decoration as an end in itself while others use pattern, repetition, and fragmentation as tools with which to evoke the mosaic nature of perception.
The great majority of the works in this exhibition attempt to find a harmonic and expressive intersection between the appearance of things and a dynamic compositional order, be it lyrical, geometrically analyzed, or fanciful. Rigorous attention to formal concerns and to the poetic possibilities of painting in particular are finding ongoing life and sustenance here in Wayne.
