2003 National Spring Open Juried Exhibition
Friday, May 23, 2003
The Wayne Art Center is pleased to present the 2003 National Spring Open Juried Exhibition from May 2-23. The exhibition includes approximately 50 paintings, sculptures, photographs and works on paper, selected from over 400 entrants from throughout the United States. The exhibitions frequently mark the first time artists from other states, such as California, Florida, Illinois, Kentucky, Lousiana, and New Mexico exhibit their works in the Philadelphia area.
This year’s juror is Jeffrey Carr, a figurative painter who will become the new Dean at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts in June. The exhibition will open with a preview reception and awards ceremony on Friday, May 2 (call 610-688-3553 for information and tickets). The following week on Saturday, May 10 at 2 PM, Carr will conduct a Juror’s talk and tour of the exhibition (admission is free).
Carr is the chairman of art and art history at Saint Mary’s College of Maryland. He recently showed his work in the Wayne Art Center’s fundraising exhibition, The Unbroken Circle: A Tribute to Quita Brodhead. His drawing, Portrait of Leslie, 2002, was one of eight works from that exhibition given to The State Museum of Pennsylvania in Harrisburg by the Wayne Art Center with funds donated by H. F. and Marguerite Lenfest. Carr’s work was also included in the exhibition, Imaginative Affinities: Echoes of Edwin Dickinson in Contemporary American Painting, organized last fall for the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts by Wayne Art Center instructor Scott Noel.
